The Fire Update Support Engine is an integrated information system that was developed for the facilitation of emergency response. This concept was developed as a result of my Master’s research which was completed at Carleton University in 2012. The final product was given the title “Fire Update Support Engine (FUSE): Visual Integration of Information within the Complex Environment of Emergency Response”. The research for this concept was completed with the members of the regional response teams of the Ministry of Natural Resources in Ontario, Canada. The team members were able to assist in guiding the development of a design that could potentially facilitate the information collection, analysis and forest fire response processes. The overall goal was to gather all of the information into one location allowing for more informed decision and a more efficient response to forest fires.
The first of the final designs is called the Inset Map design. Here the users are able to gather all of the information that they require related to any fire or resource from a map or a selection of menus. The users are able to control and manipulate this information through customization of the displayed information. Users can turn any layer of information on or off at anytime while having the ability to zoom in on a specific area while still maintaining access to the overall situation with the inset map.
The second of the designs is titled the Full Map design. Here the users are able to see the full situation across the region with access to further information through the use of menus. This design is a more abstract approach to the visual as compared to the Inset Map design, taking a less is more approach with the required information. All of the details related to specific fire information and resources are grouped according to the common fire.
This is an extremely brief introduction to the work that was done over my three years at Carleton and there is still a lot more work to be done. If you are interested in learning more about FUSE and the research processes that led to its development please feel free to comment below or contact me at: email@example.com. And while you’re here please take some time to visit my website and my blog for more information on some of my illustration work.
Thanks for visiting and I look forward to hearing from you!
